Juanan Soria

The Carrefour des Arts Foundation presents the solo exhibition 'The Enemies of Memory' by the Spanish artist Juanan Soria (ES, 1985) as a result of his third prize in the Art Contest 2021 with whom the Foundation has established a partnership. In this exhibition, Juanan Soria presents a selection of paintings and drawings from recent years. The exhibition questions the way in which a society preserves its own cultural memory. A society that, in certain situations, sees how its art history and idols have been abruptly destroyed.

Orphaned, shattered, like ashes in the air. These words could describe a society that eliminates its former idols, leaving only remnants, conjectures and arbitrary interpretations of what was and is no longer. Soria takes these points as a starting point for interpreting various works of art destroyed or damaged in conflicts or wars. The scars and traces of certain aggressions in the works of art are used as the motor for a dialogue between us and the work of art.

Juanan Soria does not make a literal reconstruction of past works, but a reflection on the importance of the traces of aggression, theft or displacement during the life of the works and on the way they have defined their identity over time. Soria's work is like a game board where two antonyms, oblivion and memory, play out. Juanan Soria lives and works in Ghent. Juanan Soria lives and works in Ghent. His work is represented by the Husk gallery in Brussels.
