Léa Belooussovitch

Léa Belooussovitch (Paris, 1989) is interested in the power of images, drawing inspiration from the vast world of the press. Using historical images and archive documents, often from tragic events, she creates drawings with coloured pencils, wool and felt. Such an unusual medium inevitably influences the presentation of scenes of war, mourning, shootings, attacks and processions, retaining only colour and symbolic meaning. The titles remain as remnants that are recognisable only as shapes and colours. Each work presents tones inspired by reality that tip over into abstraction. Léa plays with the contrast between these scenes of suffering and the seductive and bewitching character of her drawings.

There is a stark contrast between the violence of the subject matter and the softness of the textiles, a medium traditionally associated with femininity and domesticity. The shine and finesse of velvet, silk and satin serve to emphasise the powerful scenes depicted. The Facepalm series shows women accused of crimes or complicity during prohibition in 1930s Chicago, whereby the ‘facepalm’ gesture signifies their humiliation in front of journalists at the end of their trial. Here, Léa erases the historical context by close cropping and retouching, leaving the viewer space to use their imagination and give back the humanity to the images. Nevertheless, she takes a critical look at the voyeurism of the press and social media that amplifies the vulnerability of victims. At the same time, she questions our relationship between repulsion and attraction to such images and to violence. At the Carrefour des Arts, Léa worked in contrast to this interest in others, when she reinterpreted images from family archives with a more personal vision of the world.
