Dans son travail polymorphe, Jot Fau (Ieper, 1987) convie la sculpture, l’installation, l’objet, le vêtement, le textile et la performance. Jot investit l’espace par l’installation d’objets occupant tant le mur que le sol ou le plafond et redéfinit leurs codes de présentation. Les frontières entre art et vie quotidienne n’existent plus dans son travail qui sort des carcans habituels pour recréer le monde avec d’autres matériaux. Ces objets usuels sont reproduits ou recouverts avec des matériaux inattendus tel que le cuir, et sont désormais privés de leur utilité pour être dotés d’une nouvelle symbolique dont resurgit une mémoire enfuie. Avec ces objets qu’elle sauve de l’oubli et de la banalité, ou encore de la décrépitude, Jot entretient bien souvent un lien personnel lié à son vécu. C’est ainsi que les Vestes de la colère et de la joie incarnent la transition de l’artiste d’un état émotionnel à un autre et rappelle sa force intérieure lui ayant permis de surmonter des expériences difficiles.
Dans ses œuvres, Jot mêle également art et écriture. C’est pour l’artiste l’une des multiples façons de donner à son travail une dimension socio-politique et d’aborder les questions de genres, d’identité, de mœurs ou encore de corps au travail. L’humain et son rapport au corps est l’une de ses premières préoccupations. Elle explore notamment la relation à son propre corps et à son identité ainsi qu’à la nature en se mettant dans la peau de personnages fictifs. À travers le projet The Hunter, Jot devient une chasseuse armée d’accessoires (sabots, peau de cactus, guêtres et pirogue) dont elle adopte jusqu’à l’attitude. Jot pousse si loin certains projets identitaires que fiction et réalité tendent à se confondre. Est alors posée une question bien réelle : jusqu’à quel point peut-on déconstruire son identité, déterminée par le milieu socio-économique et culturel de notre naissance pour la refaçonner à l’image de nos besoins ?
In her polymorphic work, Jot Fau (Ieper, 1987) combines sculpture, installation, objects, clothing, textile and performance. Jot fills a space by installing objects on the wall, the floor or the ceiling, and redefines the conventions of presentation. The boundaries between art and everyday life no longer exist in her work, which breaks out of the usual shackles to recreate another world of objects. Everyday items are reproduced or covered with unexpected materials such as leather. They are henceforth deprived of their use and endowed with new meaning. Saved from oblivion, banality and decay, Jot often relates them to her personal life e.g. Vestes de la colère et de la joie (Jackets of Anger and Joy) which embody a transition from one emotional state to another and serve as a recollection of the inner strength required to overcome difficulty.
Jot also blends art and writing in order to give her work a socio-political dimension, addressing questions of gender, identity, morality and the body at work. The relationship of human beings and the body is of primary concern. She explores the correlation between her own body and identity, and to nature, by putting herself into the shoes of fictional characters. In The Hunter, Jot becomes a hunter armed with accessories (clogs, cactus skin, gaiters and a canoe), pushing the notion of identity so far that fiction and reality merge. A very real question is then posed: to what extent can we deconstruct our identity, determined by the socio-economic and cultural environment of our birth, and reshape it in the image of our needs?
In haar polymorfe werk verwelkomt Jot Fau (Ieper, 1987) sculpturen, installaties, objecten, kledij, textiel en performance. Jot bekleedt de ruimte door objecten op de muur, de vloer of het plafond te installeren en herdefinieert hun presentatiecodes. De grenzen tussen kunst en dagelijks leven bestaan niet meer in haar werk, dat het gangbare keurslijf doorbreekt om de wereld met andere materialen te herscheppen. Deze alledaagse voorwerpen worden gereproduceerd, of bedekt, met onverwachte materialen zoals leer, en worden aldus ontdaan van hun nut om een nieuwe symboliek te bekomen waaruit een vervlogen herinnering opduikt. Met deze objecten, die zij redt van de vergetelheid en banaliteit, of van het verval, onderhoudt Jot vaak een persoonlijke band die gelinkt is aan haar eigen levenservaring. Zo belichamen de Vestes de la colère et de la joie de overgang van de ene emotionele toestand naar de andere en herinneren aan haar innerlijke kracht die haar in staat heeft gesteld lastige ervaringen te overwinnen.
In haar werken combineert Jot ook kunst en schriftuur. Dit is een van de vele manieren waarop de kunstenares haar werk een sociaal-politieke dimensie geeft en kwesties van gender, identiteit, moraal of het lichaam op het werk aan de orde stelt. De mens en zijn verhouding tot het lichaam houdt haar sterk bezig. Door in de huid van fictieve personages te kruipen onderzoekt ze de relatie tot haar eigen lichaam en identiteit, en tot de natuur. In het project The Hunter wordt Jot een jager, gewapend met allerlei accessoires (klompen, camouflage, beenkappen en prauw), en neemt ze zelfs ook diens attitude over. Jot drijft bepaalde identiteitsprojecten zo ver dat fictie en realiteit neigen te versmelten. Dit werpt een zeer reële vraag op: in hoeverre kunnen wij onze identiteit, die bepaald wordt door de sociaal-economische en culturele omgeving waarin wij geboren zijn, deconstrueren om haar aan onze behoeften aan te passen?
